What to Do If Your NYSC Discharge Certificate Is Missing

Just imagine standing at the POP venue on your passing out day, watching my your name get called out one by one. When it was finally your turn, an NYSC official handed you a cream-coloured certificate, shook your hand, and says congratulations. That moment felt like the finish line of a long race right?

If you’ve already served and you want to replace a lost or damaged NYSC Discharge Certificate, this guide covers everything you need to know. We’ll walk through the entire process from start to finish, including what documents are required.

What Is the NYSC Discharge Certificate?

The NYSC Discharge Certificate (formally called the Certificate of National Service or CNS) is the official document issued to corps members who successfully complete the mandatory one-year national service programme. It is one of the most important documents a Nigerian graduate can hold.

Almost every serious employer in Nigeria requires the NYSC discharge certificate before extending a job offer. Professional regulatory bodies, postgraduate institutions, government agencies, and even some international organisations ask for it. Without it, your academic qualifications alone may not be enough to secure employment in most formal sectors.

It is important to understand that the discharge certificate is different from the exemption certificate and the exclusion letter, three documents that are often confused with each other.

Discharge Certificate vs. Exemption Certificate vs. Exclusion Letter

Document Who Gets It What It Means
Discharge Certificate Corps members who completed full one-year service Proof that you served and were officially discharged
Exemption Certificate Graduates who are legally excused from service (e.g., age 30+ at graduation, certain armed forces members) Proof that you are recognised but legally exempt from serving
Exclusion Letter Graduates who are not eligible for NYSC at all (e.g., part-time graduates, certain certificate holders) Confirms you are excluded from the scheme entirely

Only corps members who were properly mobilized, completed the orientation camp, served at a PPA, attended CDS, and fulfilled all NYSC obligations recieve the discharge certificate.

What If You Lost Your NYSC Discharge Certificate?

Losing your NYSC discharge certificate is stressful, but it’s not the end of the world. Here’s what you need to know:

NYSC’s official policy is that lost or burnt certificates are not reprinted. Instead, a Letter of Confirmation is issued in its place. This letter serves as an official substitute and is generally accepted by most employers for verification purposes.

To apply for a Letter of Confirmation or replacement:

  1. Visit the NYSC State Secretariat where you served
  2. Submit a formal application explaining the circumstances of the loss
  3. Provide a valid ID, your call-up number, and any documents you have linking you to your service year
  4. Pay the applicable replacement or processing fee
  5. Allow two weeks to three months for processing, depending on the secretariat’s workload

If you can, contact the NYSC State Secretariat in your state of service not just any secretariat as they hold your original service records.
